20 years of Hope | from Chris Woodruff, EXECUTIVE Director

“20 Years ago this month, August of 2000, the very first Lighthouse Family Retreat took place on Tybee Island with 6 families living through childhood cancer. The impact of that week has carried on for 20 years now into our 20th summer of retreats and God continues to amaze with all the incredible stories of life change and Kingdom impact.

In the 20 years since that first week on the shores of the Atlantic, we have done over 200 Retreats and served over 2,000 families living through childhood cancer! Only God could have planned such an incredible journey. Immeasurably more than we could have ever asked or imagined.

I want to thank you for everything you have done to make Lighthouse what it is today: for your prayers; for your time serving and sweating with us at the beach; for sharing with your friends, churches and companies about the mission and vision of Lighthouse. Thank you for giving so generously to keep Lighthouse going strong. We could do none of this without you.

Here is to the next 20 years, that we continue to grow to serve EVERY family that applies and needs a week away from the chaos of childhood cancer.

All for HIS glory!”

History of Lighthouse Family Retreat

Lighthouse Family Retreat was founded in 1999 by a pediatric oncology nurse who witnessed the devastating impact childhood cancer has on the entire family. Lighthouse Family Retreat has been providing seaside retreats complete with programs tailored to the whole family since 2000. The first Lighthouse retreat was hosted off the coast of Georgia on Tybee island for six Retreat Families living through childhood cancer.

Lighthouse has now grown to host retreats on the Florida Panhandle as well as the North Carolina coast. The number of Retreat Families able to attend a retreat ranges from 10 - 14 dependent on location. At the completion of the 2019 Retreat Season in September, Lighthouse will host 22 total retreats. This is the most retreats Lighthouse has ever hosted in one year. And we aren’t stopping there! Lighthouse has the goal of growing to provide space on retreat to be able to strengthen every family that applies.

Do You Lighthouse?

Lighthouse (verb):

After retreat, it is easy to fall back into a regular routine, so at the end of each retreat week, we challenged all Family Partners to go home to their communities and “lighthouse”! We encourage everyone to look for opportunities around them to serve! Connecting with your local church or increasing your efforts toward an organization you are passionate about are two great ways to serve. “Lighthousing” may even include breaking out of your comfort zone! But your actions may lead to further opportunities to serve. Use the momentum you get from serving and carry it into your relationship with the Lord.

Challenge your friends and family to join in! Can you imagine what life would be like if you served everyday like you did at Lighthouse? Let's not just imagine, let's make it happen!
