Why Summer Staff?
Lighthouse Family Retreat serves families living through childhood cancer by creating environments on seaside retreats where they can rest, experience joy, restore relationships, and find hope in God. Our Summer Staff program ensures that retreats are executed successfully! Whether in the office preparing the details or aiding in the business development, or in the sand executing the experience, our Summer Staff program is a rewarding and unique venture!
As a Beach Intern, you should be prepared to…
SET THE MOOD // Each retreat of the season will bring a new set of around 150 people to the retreat. As a summer staffer, you’ll be expected to set the temperature for the retreat, not adapt to it! You’ll be expected to model enthusiasm, flexibility, and grace for our leadership teams, Family Partners, and Retreat Families. People will look to you for guidance in the details, but also for your smiles and welcoming arms.
BUILD RELATIONSHIPS // Each retreat offers a chance to meet people from all walks of life, in every stage of life. Between Family Partners, Leadership, Retreat Families, Full-Time Staff and other Summer Staff, you’ll have the opportunity and expectation to invest and make connections. Lighthouse is one big, happy family, despite the fact that most people showing up to any given retreat are strangers, a bond built in the sand is one that lasts. People will look to you for intentionality.
WORK HARD // Let’s face it, a summer at the beach sounds like a dream come true, and it is! But with that dream comes a lot of hard (and if we’re honest…sweaty) work. It takes a team working diligently together for sometimes really long days to ensure that everyone has a great retreat experience. But we can promise you that the work will be rewarding. When you see the smiles on kids faces, the parents holding hands, and the families making new memories, the long, hot days will be worth it. Whether your assigned to lead Flip Flop, help in the Kitchen or set up different environments with Production, the entire summer staff team will work together and support one another, arm in arm, towards the end goal of families finding hope in God.
HAVE FUN // At Lighthouse, we want people to experience joy, and that starts with you! While we know that joy is a state of full reliance of God, and it comes from a peace with your circumstances, we will do everything we can to bring some happiness. There will be dance parties, late night ice cream socials, karaoke, and jokes! We want Lighthouse to be a fun and memorable experience for all involved, so be prepared to bring your dancing shoes and your smiling faces for a summer full of laughter and fun!
SHOW PEOPLE JESUS // While we at Lighthouse want to hope for a cure, we also want people to place their hope in something unchanging… we want our families to put their hope in God. We set an example for God’s love. We get to be the hands and feet of Jesus and show genuine compassion for families living through the hardest time of their lives with childhood cancer. There will be struggles, but at the end of the day, people will see Jesus in you as you serve and love. Be prepared to show extravagant, unexpected love to everyone on the retreat, as you will be the best example of Jesus.
As an Office Intern in our headquarters in Atlanta, you should be prepared to…
LOVE THE DETAILS // Our retreat program is a lot of fun in the sand, but it requires funding and operations behind-the-scenes. You will get an inside look into nonprofit management and development and help execute marketing and business plans.
BE EAGER TO LEARN // In the office, you may have the opportunity to assist in the business development and earn valuable skills in non-profit management. Every task and assignment as an office intern will contribute to our mission to serve families living through childhood cancer, even if it’s a backstage look!
WORK DILIGENTLY // During the summer, there are many moving pieces that go into making each retreat season the best it can be. This will require you to think on your feet and be flexible. If you describe yourself as a self-starter, you’ll fit in great in our office! The entire team works hard to create great experiences – in and out of the sand!
