Restoration for the Whole Family
RETREAT EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES
This is one of the most important retreat activities. Common Ground is a safe place for parents to connect with other parents living through a cancer diagnosis for their children. While Family Partners take care of their children in Flip Flop, each morning Retreat Family parents get time away together to build community and share their stories with other parents who understand.
Parents' Night Out
During the Unbirthday Party, Retreat Family parents get to have the evening to themselves. They get the opportunity to have a date, spend time together over dinner, and reconnect as a couple like they haven't in a long time. Everything is taken care of for them to enjoy their evening out together!
Moms Only / Dads Only
Both Retreat moms and Retreat Dads have a special time during a retreat to bond together, have some fun, and enjoy each other's company. Both Retreat Family dads and Family Partner dads get together one night to test their poker skills over beef jerky and root beer.
Then we also have a special afternoon just for Retreat Family moms with a catered lunch, gifts, and some surprises to show our appreciation for all they do.
This is a time for fun in the sun with all Family Partners and Retreat Family kids! Flip Flop happens every day when Retreat Family parents go to Common Ground. All of the kids are separated into age and gender groups to make life-long friends, go swimming, play games, and prepare for the Friday night Talent Show!
During Parents' Night Out, all Family Partners and kids have a HUGE party to celebrate every child on that retreat! There's dancing, streamers, ice cream sundaes, Unbirthday cake, games, balloons and more!
This is the crescendo of the week! Every kid gets the opportunity to have the spotlight and for every parent to see their child shine. Dancing, costumes, music, singing, standing ovations, and much much more!
Endearing and Enduring Relationships
Who makes up a retreat?
Every year, hundreds of families who have children with cancer come on a week-long retreat to find rest and healing.
Volunteers show up and fill a spot but Family Partners come alongside families to help ease the everyday burdens of childhood cancer, providing them an opportunity to rest, reconnect, experience joy and find hope!We don’t want a Family Partner to just be a title, but an attitude of the heart, a posture of service as we come together to give families a sense of relief and a retreat away.
Our Staff Team
Each retreat is hosted by our team which is made up of Lighthouse staff, college student interns, and high school student interns. It's our joy to make sure things run smoothly for our Retreat Families and Family Partners.
